I’ve got significant space for backmatter in Pretty Deadly and some thoughts about what I’d like to do with it, but I want to know what you think. What do you consider backmatter that adds value to your comics? What have you especially enjoyed? Anything you’d really like to see? Anything you’re sick of?

I’m not sure Tumblr is the best platform for this sort of conversation/inquiry, but I just posted this inquiry to my Jinxworld board and I’m really interested in your thoughts.

The usual scripts and concept art always make for cool backmatter. But I guess the best would be something the differs from the norm.

Fatale and The Massive both have really cool takes on backmatter. Extra world/theme building type notes and stories are cool.

I also love seeing what other texts were influential to the writer/artist (intertextuality is fun!).

Dear Convention whose name will be spared,

Refusal of professional colorists to be listed as guests at your convention is extremely ignorant.

Your archaic view of creatives is part of what keeps jobs of this industry undervalued. Congratulations, you’ve officially locked out a great percentage of talented, friendly, hard working creatives who would originally have had great interest in attending your convention.

Your one sentence, “this is not a colorists thing”, was surely the most pigheaded and dismissive thing I’ve been told since I began professional coloring. This is a seriously small-minded view of the way things work. Let me explain why:

Colorists make or break a book: Colorists are extremely essential to the medium of colored comics. I don’t think I need to explain to most any fan, the value of a colorist like Laura Martin or Dave Stewart. Colorists create form for figures and their environments, mood, tone and “Effects” like, blurring, flares, glows, color holds, etc. If any of this is done badly or doesn’t give clarity to an artist’s work, the artwork fails.

Colorists are the unknown amazing backup singer who makes every track awesome BUT-Colorists are not compensated nearly as much as artists: Colorists, while paid in some instances very fairly, are never compensated even half of what the artist on the title is generally making. Colorists work because they love COMICS.

Colorists have no way to sell artwork or originals: On top of being paid less than an artist, colorists usually have no way to sell any of their original work they’ve done. Making con appearances an important area of their self promotion where they get to see fans, sign comics, sell color sketches and possibly sell prints of their own work or paintings.

Colorists work hard to help get comic books in on time: Without colorists, comics wouldn’t get done, plain and simple. Artists, I hate to break it to you, run late. Colorists are forced to pick up their slack and if they take any pride in what they do, they’ll make sure it looks great and worth reading anyways with no fault or consequence usually delivered to the artist in anyway, because this is how comics work.

Every single person who works in comics: editors, any bullpen members, letterers, colorists, artists, writers put a lot of hours in the work chair. They deserve to be recognized and at the very least, acknowledged as professionals and given the same respect and courtesy as other professionals.

Making a general sweep that NO colorist deserves to be at your show is a fine line you’ve drawn in the sand there. We’re happy to go to other shows, amazing shows like, Thought Bubble, Heroes, NYCC, ECCC, D.I.C.E where they not only appreciate colorists and simply list their name on a website but have also comped tables, included colorists, editors, letterers on panels and workshops and very warmly welcomed them to a con that appreciates comics.

Your personal thoughts and ideas about creatives will probably never change but you should, for the sake of your con, update your standards and include the whole of any professional in the industry to further promote, respect and appreciate the value of comics.

This is completely non-Damian related, but X-Factor and Young Justice (both the original comic series, as well as several for the cartoon series) writer Peter David just suffered a massive stroke December 30th 2012 while on vacation in Florida. According to his wife, Kathleen, on his blog “he has lost most of the use of his right arm, his right leg is incredibly weak, the vision in his right eye is blurry, and the right side of his face is drooping slightly.” Though he seems to be improving with each update, the cost of recovering from a stroke is immense.

Dan Slott and the rape of Peter Parker and Mary Jane

It took me awhile to figure out my thoughts on the recent events in Spider-Man comic books. Now that I’ve had some time to digest it I’d like to point just how perverse and unceremonious Slott’s ending for Peter Parker really is.

In the story arc ‘Dying Wish’ Doc Ock swaps bodies with Peter Parker. Of course this is not possible in the real world. But If it was, it would be a crime that is a cross between identity theft and rape.

Ock has forcefully inserted his conciousness into the body of Peter Parker without consent. He has forced Peters conciousness into his own desicated and dying body. Ock is free to do whatever he wants in and with Peter’s body. Force it into acts which it’s original host would never consent to. 700 issues of Amazing Spider-Man have ended with a contrived sci-fi rape of it’s lead character.

But ofcourse it doesn’t end there. Ock in Peter’s body kisses Mary Jane. And with that, one of the greatest female icons in comic books is sexually assaulted. The painfully clear subtext throughout Amazing #700 and Avenging #15.1 is that Mary Jane is in very real danger of being raped by Doc Ock

Whats even more disturbing is that ANY sexual activity Ock enages in while in Peter’s body is rape on multiple levels. Ock is raping Peter body by existing in it. He is raping Peter further by using his body for sexual purposes that he cannot and would not consent to. And finally he is raping whoever has been deceived into believing that he is the real Peter Parker.

As if this whole sick problem wasn’t enough, Slott expects Spider-Man fans to believe that his immediate supporting cast cannot distinguish the real Peter Parker from Otto FUCKING Octavius in Peter’s skin.

Slott has been handed the keys to a franchise that is based on the idea of a relatable protagonist. What he chosen to do is replace that character with an evil, psychotic megolomaniac as the lead. Slott has ended Spider-Man by inverting everything the character has stood for over the last 50 years.

I usually think its in bad taste for fans of a franchise to declare that said franchise has been ‘raped’. But in this scenario its quite justified. Dan Slot has (quite literally) raped Spider-Man and Mary Jane.

In June 1994, Frank Miller paid tribute to the late Jack Kirby, delivering a keynote speech at an industry seminar in Baltimore. “An age passes with Jack Kirby,” Miller said. “I can’t call it the Marvel Age of comics, because I don’t believe in rewarding thievery. I call it the Jack Kirby age of comics.”

Members of the Marvel staff, sitting at a table front and center, shifted in their seats as Miller declared that the only way to talk about the future of comics was to talk about its “sad, sorry, history of broken lives … of talents denied the legal ownership of what they created with their own hands and minds, ignored or treated as nuisances while their creations went on to make millions and millions of dollars.” After noting that “seventeen years of loyal service and spectacular sales didn’t buy Chris Claremont one whit of loyalty from Marvel Comics,” and scoffing at Jim Shooter’s claims that he’d “spent his whole life fighting for creators’ rights,” Miller turned the screws.

“Marvel Comics is trying to sell you all on the notion that characters are the only important component of its comics. As if nobody had to create these characters, as if the audience is so brain-dead they can’t tell a good job from a bad one. You can almost forgive them this, since their characters aren’t leaving in droves like the talent is. For me it’s a bit of a relief to finally see the old ‘work-made-for-hire talent don’t matter’ mentality put to the test. We’ve all seen the results, and they don’t even seem to be rearranging the deck chairs.”

Creators who complained about defections to Image and other companies, he continued, were “like galley slaves complaining that the boat is leaking.” The age of company-owned superhero universes—the Jack Kirby Age—was over. “It’s gone supernova and burned itself out, and begun a slow steady collapse into a black hole. We couldn’t feed off the genius of Jack Kirby forever. The King is dead, and he has no successor. We will not see his like again. No single artist can replace him. No art form can be expected to be gifted with more than one talent as brilliant as his. It’s a scary time because change is always scary. But all the pieces are in place for a new proud era, a new age of comics. Nothing’s standing in our way, nothing too big and awful, nothing except some old bad habits and our own fears, and we won’t let them stop us.”

The crowd rose to its feet.

These last issues of Spider-Man have been absolutely nauseating and cringe inducing.

Hate. Hate. Hate.

Guess I won’t be buying Superior Spider-Man.

Atleast I can go back and catch up on older stories to get my Peter Parker fix.

Good luck to Dan Slott and his team though. I’ve enjoyed some of his work and theres still a chance Superior COULD turn out to be a good book. I just don’t want to be a part of it.
